Polkadot (DOT) is a multi-chain blockchain network created by Ethereum co-founder Dr Gavin Wood and launched in 2020 by the Web3 Foundation. Its core innovation is enabling different blockchains — called parachains — to connect and communicate with each other through a central coordination layer called the Relay Chain. This architecture allows specialised blockchains to exist independently while sharing Polkadot’s pooled security and interoperating seamlessly, solving one of blockchain’s biggest limitations: isolation.

Key Polkadot concepts: Relay Chain — the central chain providing shared security and consensus (uses Nominated Proof of Stake); Parachains — sovereign blockchains leasing slots on the Relay Chain to inherit its security; Bridges — connections to external networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum; Substrate — Polkadot’s blockchain-building framework used to create parachains quickly; and DOT token — used for governance (DOT holders vote on protocol upgrades), staking, and parachain slot auctions. Polkadot is frequently described as a “blockchain of blockchains” or an internet of blockchains, enabling a future where hundreds of specialised chains interoperate as one ecosystem.

Polkadot’s governance model is among the most sophisticated in crypto, giving DOT holders direct on-chain voting power over protocol changes, treasury spending, and upgrades.

Example: A DeFi chain and an identity verification chain both run as Polkadot parachains. A user can verify their identity on one chain and use it to access financial services on another — all within the same ecosystem, trustlessly.
