Avalanche (AVAX) is a Layer 1 blockchain platform launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, designed to solve the blockchain trilemma — achieving decentralisation, security, and scalability simultaneously. Avalanche uses a novel consensus protocol (also called Avalanche consensus) based on repeated random sub-sampling of validators, enabling near-instant transaction finality (under 2 seconds) and throughput of 4,500+ TPS. It is one of the fastest smart contract platforms in crypto.

Avalanche’s unique architecture consists of three interoperable chains: the X-Chain (for creating and trading assets), the C-Chain (an EVM-compatible smart contract chain where most DeFi activity happens), and the P-Chain (for platform coordination and validator management). Beyond this, Avalanche introduced the concept of Subnets — customisable blockchains that inherit Avalanche’s security while having their own rules, tokens, and validators. This makes Avalanche particularly attractive for institutional and gaming use cases requiring private or permissioned chains. AVAX is the native token used for fees, staking, and securing Subnets.

Avalanche has attracted major institutional partnerships, including with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and several global financial institutions exploring Subnet-based settlement networks. Its DeFi ecosystem includes Trader Joe (DEX), Aave, and Benqi.

Example: A gaming company launches its own Avalanche Subnet for an in-game economy, using a custom token with near-instant finality. Players trade items with sub-cent fees without even knowing they’re using a blockchain.
