Chainlink (LINK) is the most widely used decentralised oracle network in crypto — a critical piece of infrastructure that connects smart contracts to real-world data. Smart contracts are powerful but inherently isolated: they can only access information already on their own blockchain. Chainlink solves this by providing a decentralised network of node operators that fetch, verify, and deliver external data (prices, weather, sports results, interest rates) to blockchains in a tamper-resistant way. Without oracles like Chainlink, DeFi as we know it could not exist.

Chainlink’s main products: Price Feeds — real-time, decentralised asset price data used by virtually every major DeFi protocol (Aave, Compound, Synthetix) for accurate valuations; VRF (Verifiable Random Function) — provably fair randomness for gaming and NFT projects; CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) — a secure messaging standard for cross-chain data and token transfers; Automation — decentralised smart contract triggering; and Proof of Reserve — verifying that stablecoins and tokenised assets are actually backed by real assets. The LINK token is used to pay node operators for their data services.

Chainlink is integrated with over 1,700 projects across 18+ blockchains. It is one of the few crypto projects with deep enterprise adoption, partnering with Swift, DTCC, and major global banks.

Example: When you borrow USDC against ETH collateral on Aave, Chainlink’s price feed tells the protocol the real-time ETH price. If ETH drops below your liquidation threshold, Chainlink’s data triggers the liquidation automatically — all trustlessly and on-chain.
