Worldcoin (WLD) is a cryptocurrency and digital identity project co-founded by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), designed to solve one of AI’s most pressing problems: distinguishing humans from AI bots online. The project’s core product is the World ID — a privacy-preserving digital identity credential that proves you are a unique human being without revealing who you are. World IDs are issued after scanning a user’s iris using a custom device called the Orb, which generates a unique biometric hash stored only on the user’s device (not centrally).
Why Worldcoin matters in the AI era: as AI-generated content, deepfakes, and bots become indistinguishable from humans online, the ability to prove “proof of personhood” — that a given account or action comes from a unique real human — becomes critical for democracy, finance, and social media. Worldcoin uses zero-knowledge proofs so that World ID verification reveals only “I am a unique human” without any other personal data. The WLD token is distributed as a “Universal Basic Income” to verified humans — positioning it as a mechanism for distributing AI-generated economic value to humanity. Worldcoin is also developing World App (a crypto wallet and passport) and the World Chain (an Optimism-based L2 prioritising human-verified transactions).
