Proof of Personhood (PoP) is a cryptographic mechanism that verifies a user is a unique human being without requiring them to reveal their identity — establishing the fact of humanity and uniqueness without exposing any personal data. As AI-generated bots, deepfakes, and synthetic identities become indistinguishable from real humans online, Proof of Personhood has emerged as critical infrastructure for democratic systems, fair token distributions, spam prevention, and trustworthy AI interactions. It answers the fundamental digital question: “Am I talking to a human?”

Approaches to Proof of Personhood: Biometric PoP (Worldcoin) — iris scanning via the Orb device generates a unique biometric hash; World ID is issued as a zero-knowledge proof that can be verified without revealing any biometric data; the most robust but requires physical hardware; Social graph PoP (BrightID) — uses a web of trust based on real-world social connections to establish uniqueness; Vouching systems (Proof of Humanity) — existing verified humans vouch for new entrants, creating a growing chain of verified identities; and AI-resistant CAPTCHAs — increasingly insufficient as LLMs pass them easily. Use cases: Sybil-resistant airdrops (one wallet per human), one-person-one-vote governance, UBI token distributions, spam-free social media, and AI agent authentication (proving the agent acts on behalf of a real human).

Example: A DeFi protocol distributes a governance token airdrop using Worldcoin’s World ID for verification. Each verified human receives exactly 100 tokens regardless of how many wallets they have — preventing whales from farming the airdrop with thousands of bot wallets.
