Receiving cryptocurrency is the process of accepting a digital asset payment or transfer into your wallet. Unlike traditional bank transfers, receiving crypto requires no personal information to be shared — you simply provide the sender with your public wallet address or QR code for the specific cryptocurrency you want to receive. Each cryptocurrency has its own address format, and it is critical to only send assets to addresses that match the correct network.
To receive cryptocurrency: open your wallet app or exchange account; select the specific cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum); navigate to “Receive” or “Deposit”; copy your public address or display the QR code; share this with the sender. Once the sender broadcasts the transaction, it typically appears as “pending” in your wallet within seconds, with full confirmation taking anywhere from 1 minute (Litecoin) to 10–60 minutes (Bitcoin) depending on the network.
Critical safety rules: Always verify the address on the recipient’s end before sending large amounts — “clipboard hijacking” malware can replace copied addresses with the attacker’s address. Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone, even if they claim to be sending you funds. Sending to the wrong address or wrong network results in permanent, unrecoverable loss of funds.
Example: You want to receive 0.1 ETH from a friend. You open MetaMask, copy your Ethereum address (0x742d…8f3a), send it via text message. Your friend sends 0.1 ETH on the Ethereum mainnet. Within 30 seconds, 0.1 ETH appears in your wallet as a pending transaction.
