A seed phrase (also called a mnemonic phrase, recovery phrase, or secret recovery phrase) is a human-readable backup of your cryptocurrency wallet — a list of 12 or 24 randomly generated English words that can be used to recreate your private keys and restore full access to all accounts in your wallet, on any compatible wallet software. Seed phrases were standardised by BIP-39 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39) and are now the universal wallet backup standard across virtually every crypto wallet: MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor, Trust Wallet, Phantom, and hundreds more.
Why seed phrases matter: your seed phrase IS your wallet. Anyone who has it has complete, irreversible access to all your funds across every blockchain your wallet supports. There is no “forgot password” option; no bank to call. Seed phrase security rules: Never store it digitally (no photos, no cloud storage, no email, no notes app); Write it on paper (or engrave on metal for fire/water resistance) and store in a physically secure location; Never share it with anyone for any reason — no legitimate wallet, exchange, or support team will ever ask for it; and Consider splitting it across two secure locations for large holdings. Phishing attacks targeting seed phrases are crypto’s most common theft vector — fake wallet popups, “verification” requests, and impersonation scams all aim to trick users into entering their seed phrase.
Example: A user’s laptop is stolen. They purchase a new device, install MetaMask, click “import wallet,” enter their 12-word seed phrase from the written copy in their safe, and instantly recover full access to all their crypto holdings.
