Aptos (APT) is a Layer 1 blockchain built by former Meta (Facebook) engineers who worked on the abandoned Diem project. Launched on mainnet in October 2022, Aptos uses the Move programming language (also used by Sui) — a resource-oriented smart contract language designed for security and predictability, preventing common vulnerabilities like re-entrancy attacks and integer overflow. Aptos’ consensus mechanism is AptosBFT (a variant of HotStuff), providing fast Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus with sub-second finality.
Aptos differentiators: Block-STM parallel execution — Aptos processes transactions in parallel using Software Transactional Memory, enabling up to 160,000 TPS in theoretical benchmarks; Seamless upgrades — the network can upgrade without hard forks; Keyless accounts — similar to Sui’s zkLogin, Aptos allows wallet creation using Google/Apple login with no seed phrase required, dramatically lowering onboarding friction; and Aptos Randomness API — a native, verifiable on-chain randomness service. Aptos has attracted significant institutional investment ($350M raised pre-launch) and major ecosystem partnerships with Microsoft, Google, MENA Bank, and others. Its DeFi ecosystem includes Liquidswap, Aries Markets, and Thala. The APT token is used for gas, staking, and governance.
Example: A user creates an Aptos wallet using their Google account in 30 seconds, with no seed phrase, no browser extension needed. They receive APT via a QR code and immediately start using DeFi — the kind of UX that could onboard non-crypto users at scale.
