Protocol Owned Liquidity (POL) is a DeFi innovation pioneered by OlympusDAO (OHM) where the protocol itself owns the liquidity it uses for trading, rather than renting it from liquidity providers with token emissions. Traditional DeFi protocols attract liquidity by offering high APY token rewards to LPs – but this mercenary capital leaves as soon as rewards decrease, causing liquidity crises. POL solves this by having the protocol treasury own the LP tokens permanently. OlympusDAO bonding mechanism: users sell their liquidity (ETH/OHM LP tokens) to the protocol in exchange for discounted OHM at a 5-day vesting – the protocol acquires the LP position permanently. Key advantages: eliminates ongoing liquidity rental costs (no continual token emissions), LP fees accrue to the treasury rather than external LPs, creates a stable liquidity foundation, and the protocol never faces a sudden liquidity crisis. POL was widely adopted after OHM success: Tokemak, Frax, and many DAOs implemented variants. The model became less popular after OHM token collapsed in 2022, but the POL concept remains influential in treasury management strategy.

Example: Example: Before POL, Uniswap liquidity came entirely from external LPs incentivised by UNI emissions – costly and unreliable. A DAO adopting POL builds a $10M treasury of OHM/ETH LP tokens. The LP fees generate $300K/year in protocol revenue, the $10M liquidity is permanent regardless of token prices, and the DAO no longer needs to dilute holders with LP rewards.
