FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out — the anxiety-driven impulse to buy an asset because its price is rising rapidly and you feel you’re being left behind. FOMO is one of the most destructive emotional forces in trading and investing, responsible for countless ill-timed entries at market tops, overextension of position sizes, and abandonment of carefully crafted trading plans. In crypto, where price moves can be explosive (50–80% in days), FOMO is particularly powerful and particularly dangerous.
FOMO typically manifests as: buying at or near price peaks after seeing headlines or social media excitement; ignoring risk management (skipping stop-losses, using too much capital); chasing pumps in altcoins purely because of green candles; and abandoning a strategy mid-trade to switch to whatever is moving fastest. The irony is that FOMO often causes investors to buy exactly what disciplined traders are selling. Successful traders counteract FOMO with pre-defined trade rules, position limits, and the discipline to recognise that there will always be another opportunity.
Key anti-FOMO principles: only enter trades that meet your pre-set criteria; accept that missing a move is always better than entering recklessly; keep a trading journal to track FOMO decisions and their outcomes; and remember that the biggest crypto crashes often follow the biggest FOMO-fuelled rallies.
Example: In November 2021, Bitcoin hit $69,000 and retail FOMO was at its peak — Google searches for “buy Bitcoin” spiked to all-time highs. Investors who bought due to FOMO at that peak saw their investment fall over 75% to $15,500 by November 2022. Those who waited for a structured re-entry point recovered and profited.
