The Sandbox is a blockchain-based virtual world and game creation platform built on Ethereum where users own virtual land (LAND NFTs), create experiences using a no-code VoxEdit game builder, and earn SAND tokens. Founded in 2011 as a mobile game and acquired by Animoca Brands in 2018, The Sandbox transitioned to a blockchain model that made it one of the defining metaverse projects of the 2021-22 crypto bull market. The Sandbox map consists of 166,464 LAND parcels sold as NFTs — virtual plots with varying value depending on proximity to high-traffic areas and celebrity ‘estates.’ Major brands and celebrities purchased LAND: Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, Adidas, Gucci, Warner Music Group, and The Walking Dead all established a presence. SAND is the ecosystem’s primary currency: used to buy LAND and assets, pay game creators, and participate in governance of the Sandbox DAO. GEMS power the NFT asset creation system. The Sandbox distinguishes itself from Decentraland by focusing on gaming experiences rather than social spaces, and by using a voxel (3D pixel block) aesthetic. The platform suffered from low active user numbers despite high LAND sale valuations — a criticism levelled at the entire metaverse category. The broader ‘metaverse winter’ of 2022-23 significantly depressed SAND and LAND prices from their peaks.

Example: A music label purchases a LAND estate adjacent to Snoop Dogg’s virtual mansion in The Sandbox. They build a virtual concert venue using VoxEdit, host an event where fans pay SAND for tickets, and sell artist merchandise as NFT wearables. At 2021 peak prices, the venue hosts 10,000 attendees paying $5 each in SAND — $50,000 revenue from a virtual event, demonstrating the metaverse’s commerce potential when user numbers support it.
