LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol that enables smart contracts to send messages and transfer tokens between different blockchains without traditional bridges. Launched in 2022 by LayerZero Labs, the protocol uses a novel two-party verification model: an Oracle (like Chainlink or Google Cloud) delivers block headers, while a Relayer delivers transaction proofs; both must collude to fake a message, making fraud extremely difficult. This ‘Ultra Light Node’ design is more trust-minimised than older bridge designs (which typically rely on a multisig committee). LayerZero connects over 70 blockchains including Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, Polygon, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, and many more — the broadest cross-chain connectivity of any interoperability protocol. Developers use LayerZero to build OFTs (Omnichain Fungible Tokens) — tokens that exist natively on multiple chains simultaneously, not wrapped versions. ZRO is the governance token, launched in 2024 after a highly controversial ‘proof of donation’ distribution requiring users to pay $0.10 per ZRO to receive their airdrop (to filter out sybils), which sparked significant community debate. LayerZero’s protocol underpins Stargate Finance (a major cross-chain liquidity protocol) and is used by dozens of major DeFi applications for cross-chain functionality.
Example: A DeFi protocol wants their governance token to exist natively on Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Solana simultaneously — not just as wrapped versions. Using LayerZero’s OFT standard, they deploy once; the protocol handles burning on the source chain and minting on the destination chain. A user holding the token on Arbitrum can send it to a friend’s Solana address in one transaction, with full native token properties on both ends.
