Immutable X (now simply ‘Immutable’) is an Ethereum Layer 2 network built specifically for gaming and NFTs, using zero-knowledge proof technology to enable gas-free NFT minting and trading while maintaining Ethereum-level security. Founded in Australia in 2018 by James Ferguson and Robbie Ferguson, Immutable launched its first ZK-rollup (built with StarkWare) in 2021. The protocol achieved NFT minting and trading with zero gas fees for users — protocol fees apply, but users pay nothing in ETH — while all assets remain secured by Ethereum. This solved a major gaming UX problem: players shouldn’t need to understand gas fees to play a game. Immutable migrated to Immutable zkEVM (a Polygon CDK-based ZK chain) in 2024, making it EVM-compatible for the first time, allowing any Ethereum game developer to deploy without code changes. IMX is the native token: used for staking by node operators, fee payment, and governance. Immutable partners include some of the largest gaming companies: GameStop (NFT marketplace), TikTok, Illuvium, Guild of Guardians, Gods Unchained (their own flagship card game), and Metalcore. Immutable has a $500M+ ecosystem fund. The IMX token accrues value from protocol fees and is distributed to stakers. Immutable competes with Ronin (Axie Infinity’s chain) and Polygon for gaming blockchain dominance.

Example: A mobile game developer integrates Immutable to give players true ownership of in-game swords and armour as NFTs. Players mint items for free (no gas), trade them on the Immutable marketplace, and withdraw to Ethereum if they want to hold long-term. The developer earns a 2.5% royalty on every secondary sale. Immutable handles all the blockchain complexity so the developer focuses on gameplay.
