Arbitrum is Ethereum’s leading Layer 2 scaling solution, built by Offchain Labs and launched in 2021. It uses Optimistic Rollup technology to process transactions off the Ethereum main chain, batch them together, and post compressed proofs back to Ethereum for security. This reduces fees 10–50x cheaper than L1 while inheriting Ethereum’s security. Arbitrum is fully EVM-compatible, meaning any Ethereum smart contract can be deployed on Arbitrum with minimal changes.

Arbitrum’s ecosystem is the largest of any Ethereum L2 by total value locked (TVL), hosting major DeFi protocols: GMX (perpetual trading), Camelot (DEX), Radiant (lending), and many others. Key variants: Arbitrum One — the main public rollup chain; Arbitrum Nova — ultra-low-fee chain for gaming and social apps; Arbitrum Orbit — framework for building custom L3 chains. The ARB token launched in March 2023 via one of crypto’s largest airdrops ($1.1B distributed to early users) and governs the Arbitrum DAO. Arbitrum’s success demonstrated market demand for Ethereum scaling: within months of launch it surpassed Ethereum itself in daily transaction count.

For traders, Arbitrum is important because many of the most sophisticated on-chain trading tools and perpetual DEXs are built here — offering CEX-like product quality with self-custody.

Example: A DeFi trader opens a leveraged perpetual position on GMX on Arbitrum. The trade executes with a $0.10 fee. The same trade on Ethereum L1 would cost $15–50 in gas — making active on-chain trading economically viable.
