zkSync is an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution built by Matter Labs using ZK-rollup technology — compressing thousands of transactions into a single cryptographic proof verified on Ethereum mainnet. ZK-rollups offer two key advantages over optimistic rollups: near-instant finality (no 7-day withdrawal window) and mathematical proof of correctness (vs fraud proofs). zkSync Era (its EVM-compatible iteration) launched in March 2023 and quickly accumulated billions in TVL. ZK is the native governance token, distributed in a large airdrop in 2024 to ecosystem users. Matter Labs has pioneered ‘ZK Stack’ — a modular framework that allows other projects to build their own ZK-powered chains (hyperchains) that interoperate within the zkSync ecosystem. Companies like Cronos and others have built hyperchains on ZK Stack. zkSync Lite (the original version) was non-EVM and focused purely on simple token transfers and swaps at ultra-low cost. zkSync Era added full EVM compatibility but initially with imperfect equivalence, requiring some contract modifications. The 2024 ZK airdrop was controversial due to Sybil concerns and a lower-than-expected allocation for genuine users. zkSync competes directly with StarkNet, Polygon zkEVM, Scroll, and Linea in the ZK-rollup space. ZK-rollups are widely expected to become the dominant Ethereum scaling solution long-term due to their superior security properties.

Example: An Ethereum user wants to swap tokens 50 times over a week. On Ethereum mainnet, 50 swaps at $5 gas each = $250. On zkSync Era, the same 50 swaps cost $0.50 total, with each swap settling in seconds. When they want to withdraw to Ethereum mainnet, funds arrive in minutes rather than 7 days (as with Optimism/Arbitrum) because ZK proofs are verified immediately rather than waiting for fraud challenges.
