Arweave is a decentralised permanent storage network that enables data to be stored forever with a single one-time payment. Traditional cloud storage requires ongoing monthly fees; if you stop paying, your data disappears. Arweave’s economic model is fundamentally different: users pay once upfront, and that payment is pooled into an endowment that generates returns to pay storage miners in perpetuity. The protocol uses a novel consensus called ‘Proof of Access’ (SPoRA): miners must demonstrate they are storing random historical blocks to mine new ones, creating a self-reinforcing incentive to preserve all data permanently. Arweave’s storage is called the ‘permaweb’ — an append-only, permanent web layer. AR is the native token paid for storage and earned by miners. Key use cases: NFT metadata storage (used by Solana NFTs to store images permanently), application deployment (dApps deployed on Arweave load from a permanent URL that can never be taken down), government archive projects, and journalism. The AO computer — Arweave’s 2024 smart contract expansion — enables arbitrary computation on stored data, extending Arweave from pure storage toward a general-purpose decentralised computer. Arweave consistently stores millions of transactions monthly and has become critical infrastructure for Solana’s NFT and dApp ecosystem.
Example: An artist mints 1,000 NFTs on Solana. The on-chain token records ownership, but the actual images must be stored somewhere. They store images on Arweave with a one-time fee of ~$0.01 per MB. In 50 years, when the artist is gone, the images remain perfectly accessible at the same Arweave URL — unlike IPFS (which requires pinning) or centralised servers (which can go offline).
