Algorand (ALGO) is a Layer 1 blockchain founded by Turing Award-winning cryptographer Silvio Micali and launched in 2019. Algorand was designed from the ground up to solve the blockchain trilemma — achieving decentralisation, security, and scalability simultaneously — using a novel Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) consensus mechanism. In PPoS, validators are randomly and secretly selected proportional to their stake using Verifiable Random Functions (VRFs), making the selection process both unpredictable and attack-resistant. Algorand achieves ~4,500 TPS with 3.4-second finality and has never forked since launch.
Algorand’s key strengths: Instant finality — transactions are confirmed in one round; no probabilistic finality or chain reorganisations; Carbon-negative — Algorand offsets more carbon than it produces, making it the most environmentally friendly major blockchain; AVM (Algorand Virtual Machine) — smart contract environment supporting Python (PyTeal/Beaker) and TypeScript; State proofs — cryptographic proofs enabling trustless cross-chain interoperability; and ARC-20 standard — Algorand Standard Assets (ASAs) for token issuance. Algorand has strong government and institutional adoption: the Marshall Islands’ sovereign digital currency (SOV), ISDA documentation on-chain, FIFA Collect NFTs, and partnerships with Circle (USDC on Algorand) and various central banks. ALGO is used for fees, staking participation, and governance.
Example: A central bank pilots a CBDC on Algorand, issuing tokenised national currency to citizens. Transaction finality in 3.4 seconds with near-zero fees makes it practical for everyday payments at scale.
