Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain project developed by the DFINITY Foundation with an ambitious goal: to extend the public internet into a decentralised world computer capable of hosting full-scale applications, websites, enterprise systems, and — crucially — AI models entirely on-chain. Launched in May 2021, ICP uses a novel consensus protocol called Threshold Relay and organises its network into subnets run by independent data centres globally, enabling web-speed performance (1–2 second finality) and the ability to serve HTTP content directly from the blockchain.

ICP’s most compelling feature for the AI era is its ability to run on-chain AI inference — hosting and executing large language models and neural networks directly within smart contracts (called “canisters” on ICP) without centralised servers. This makes it uniquely positioned as infrastructure for trustless AI applications where users can verify that the AI running their request is exactly what it claims to be, with no hidden modifications. Other ICP innovations include: reverse gas model (developers pay for compute, not users — enabling gas-free dApps); Chain Key cryptography (enables native Bitcoin integration without bridges); and vetKeys (decentralised private key management for privacy-preserving applications).

ICP is one of the most technically ambitious projects in crypto and a key name in the AI blockchain narrative alongside NEAR and Bittensor.

Example: A developer deploys a chatbot powered by an on-chain AI model on ICP. Users can query it with no gas fees, and the model’s weights are publicly verifiable on-chain — no black-box AI behind closed doors.
