Exchange coins (also called exchange tokens) are native cryptocurrencies issued by centralised crypto exchanges that provide holders with special benefits and privileges within that exchange’s ecosystem. Rather than representing a separate blockchain project, exchange coins are utility tokens tied to the performance and offerings of their issuing platform.

The most prominent exchange coins include: BNB (Binance) — the most successful exchange token, used to pay fees at a 25% discount, participate in token launches via Binance Launchpad, and power the BNB Chain ecosystem; OKB (OKX); KCS (KuCoin) — distributes 50% of daily trading fees to holders; CRO (Crypto.com); and FTT (FTX — now defunct).

Exchange tokens typically offer: trading fee discounts; priority access to new token listings and IEOs (Initial Exchange Offerings); staking rewards; governance voting rights; and enhanced withdrawal limits. Their value is closely tied to exchange trading volume and overall platform health — when an exchange grows, its token often appreciates. Conversely, the FTX collapse in 2022 demonstrated that FTT was nearly worthless when FTX became insolvent, wiping out billions in holder value overnight.

Example: A trader pays $50,000 monthly in Binance fees. By holding enough BNB to qualify for fee discounts and paying fees in BNB, they save 25% — or $12,500 per month — making BNB highly valuable as a fee-reduction tool.
